Sci-Fi’s Greatest Moments

I don’t consider myself a fan of Sci-Fi. Usually because I associated Sci-Fi with Star Trek and movies like Tron which I was never interested in. But I came across this list of Sci-Fi’s Greatest Moments in Entertainment Weekly and I found that maybe I do like Sci-Fi a little bit. I should note that I love comic books and perhaps there’s a little overlap.

More importantly for you- most of the good Sci-Fi movies are great about having tons of special effects, eye candy, and other forms of visual inspiration for designers of all walks.

I’ll recount their 25 (along with my notes) for you here:

25. V: THE MINISERIES (1983)
Never heard of it.

24. GALAXY QUEST (1999)
Eh, whatever.

23. DOCTOR WHO (1963-Present)
Uh, what?

22. QUANTUM LEAP (1989-1993)
This was the first one on the list that I actually watched. I really liked this show. Then again, I was like 12 at the time so what did I know…

21. FUTURAMA (1999-2003)
Also a cool show. I just considered this good fun, as opposed to Sci-Fi.

20. STAR WARS: CLONE WARS (2003-2005)
My son loved this. I think he likes Sci-Fi.

19. STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997)
Never seen it.

18. HEROES (2006-Present)
First of all, this is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Second, it’s more comic book genre than Sci-Fi. Either way it’s freakin great. I’m anticipating the finale for this more anxiously than I was for Spiderman 3 and I’m a fan of Spiderman.

17. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004)
Excellent movie.

16. TOTAL RECALL (1990)
Very cool Arnold flick.

15. FIREFLY/SERENITY (2002/2005)
Never saw the series, but I did enjoy the movie.

14. CHILDREN OF MEN (2006)
I was a bit dissapointed, but maybe EW is right in saying, “we believe this sci-fi thriller will be rediscovered as a true classic down the line.” Maybe.

13. THE TERMINATOR/ TERMINATOR 2 (1984 /1991)
More great Arnold movies.

12. BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)
Y’know- I never really got too crazy about this. It was cool, but I didn’t love it.

11. LOST (2004-Present)
I tried watching this but I found it boring.

10. THE THING (1982)
A classic.

9. ALIENS (1986)
This is a must see.

8. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1987-1994)
I caught a few episodes when nothing else was on. It was ok.

7. E.T. (1982)
ET was ugly. I think I liked this movie when I was little. Not enough for those ‘good feelings’ to carry over into adulthood though. Maybe if I watched it again I would realize what’s so great about it.

6. BRAZIL (1985)
Never heard of it.

5. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)
No thanks, Scotty. Just leave me here.

4. THE X-FILES (1993-2002)
I like the first few seasons of X-Files. Towards the end I lost interest.

3. BLADE RUNNER (1982)
Never seen it.

2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003-Present)
My best friend thinks this is the best series ever. I can’t say I’ve ever really watched it more than once or twice. Seemed uninteresting enough.

1. THE MATRIX (1999)
Certainly one of the best movies of all time.

I think for the most part, the really good Sci-Fi stuff spills over into mainstream stuff and that’s probably what I’ve seen. Considering I havent heard of or seen over half of the titles on this list- I’m definitely not a fan. For all you Sci-Fi geeks out there- I think you can comment or suggest your faves at EW.
